Why Are We So Mean to Each Other?

11/19/2008

I don’t mean in a worldwide, terrorist sort of way, but there is that. I mean in a day to day, common courtesy kind of way. I was cut off twice this morning on the way to work. I know, big deal right? It happens every day to everybody. My question is why? Why do we treat each other this way? Why do we think our basic, immediate needs are more important than someone else’s? The two people that cut me off, I tried to make eye contact with, not to make an obscene gesture or anything like that, but just to see them. I wanted to see if they would even acknowledge their action with a ‘sorry wave’ or something, but they did not even look. Is it a car thing? Are we insulated from common courtesy in our cars? Are we absolved from waving our thanks when someone lets us in, or from using our blinkers because we are in our big bad cars? I don’t think it’s just a car thing, because I have had plenty of people cut in front of me in lines at the store, block my path with their shopping cart, or come up to a salesperson who is helping me and interrupt with their question, but I don’t have any other answers to all the questions I just asked. Do you? What are your peeves about people?
