What’s In A (Blog) Name?

01/12/2009

I thought I would take a moment today to try and explain why I call this blog Greg’s Constant Chaos.  Among those that have given it any thought, it is often misconstrued.  I will allow that it is probably a vague title, or at best, easy to misinterpret.  I will also allow that it does little to hint at the content of the blog.  But before we over-analyze it, perhaps a little background can shed some light.

If you don’t know me, my name is Greg, I am 36 and I am married to a wonderful woman named Deb (Mrs. Chaos to you).  I don’t just say that she is wonderful either, she is an amazing mother and and even more amazing wife.  On top of everything she does for us, which is a load, by the way, that would cripple most, she is an outstanding labor and delivery nurse.  We have four beautiful daughters ranging (some may say not by much) in age from 10 down to 5.  That is even more impressive when you consider none of them are twins in any manner other than the Irish one.  My girls, all five of them, love animals.  They definitely love them more than I do, but they would tell you that would not be too hard a feat to accomplish.  They love animals so much that we are currently running a small, not-for-profit animal shelter out of our home.  At least that is what I will tell you when I ask you for donations here in a future post.  I would love to post a picture of all the critters, but I am pretty sure it would be incriminating.

I also own my own company, called Exec Business Products (also here), which is a small independent office supply company.  What that means, basically, is that me and a couple of helpers fight day in and day out against the larger chains you have all heard of to try and eke out a few customers, and in turn dollars, for ourselves.  We have been succeeding at it for 7 years now, and the previous owners 23 more before that.  Longevity aside, however, it is not easy and it takes a lot of work.

This blog started as an extension of my work, and has slowly come to incorporate some of my family experiences as well as pretty much anything else I find interesting or think you would find entertaining.  Kind of a chaotic approach, I guess.

So when I named this blog Greg’s Constant Chaos, I was referring mainly to the all of these great things in my life, and how they overlap each other and never stop churning.  I was trying to convey that while it is frenetic, I would have it no other way.

I was alluding to the fact that there is always noise.  That there is always someone not related to me in our home.  That there is always something that needs to be fixed.  That there is no amount of batteries we could purchase that would guarantee having even one available when the remote goes out.  That the tv is permanently stuck on the Disney Channel.  And all the while, I just want to sit on the couch in my underwear and watch football.

It also alludes to the fact that as soon as the house is quiet, I miss the commotion.  That as soon as the kids are gone, I miss them.  That I need them more than I probably ever let on, or that they could ever imagine.  That I know even though I can be a moody bitch sometimes, they never stop loving me.

This is my life, and I love it.
