The Sears, I mean Willis Tower in Chicago
As of July 16, 2009, the Sears Tower in Chicago has been renamed the Willis Tower, prompting not only a deluge of variations on the most obvious joke ever, but a torrent of resentment from Chicago area residents, who feel as if they are losing part of their collective identity.
One area man, Alex Lucas, 29, an Arlington Heights business systems analyst who works down the street from the skyscraper, was so displeased with the name change that he started a Web site, itsthesearstower.com, which is an online petition of sorts to get the building’s newest tenant, Willis Group Holdings, Ltd. to change the name back. The site has collected an impressive total of almost 46,000 digital signatures so far.
I think he is going to have a hard time convincing them, though, because as you can see, this new sign looks expensive.
