They almost made it. March 2nd and their big week introducing their new album to the world on David Letterman was in reach, but the cat is out of the bag. Earlier today, in an ironic twist, a division of their own record company in Australia (supposedly) put the album on sale on their website two weeks before it’s official release date. They quickly corrected their mistake, but not before the album was spread all over the internet like warm butter on a piece of toast. It has now soaked through every nook and cranny. Your mom probably has it. I admit to grabbing a copy and giving it a listen, but I am not going to say much more about the music until it is officially released (and I can make sure this is really the final version). However, I will say that this business of the leak stinks.
I would like to think the leak was intentional, because how does the record company for the biggest band in the world fumble like this? They don’t, in my opinion. Putting the record online, available for sale, takes the effort, I am assuming, of more than one person. It would be too epic a failure to be an accident. In other words, it’s unfathomable that someone could fuck up that royally. Or maybe they did. I can’t figure out what they would actually gain by leaking it purposefully, other than some publicity, but U2 get enough of that legitimately without faking a leak. Who knows, and who cares. The album is now out there.
The recording industry now has only more evidence that they have an outdated business model. The money is in touring anyway. CD’s have become razor blades, mere glorified tickets to your favorite band’s engagement at your local Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on their summer concert tour. The razor in the Gillette model, the printer in HP’s.
The album seems pretty good, I hope U2 plays here on their upcoming tour.
