How long would it take you to miss the internet? What if you were at work, and email was down too? Not long, right? Panic set in quickly for me too when I got to work the other day and discovered the whole company was down, and the problem was in the lines, like 2 miles away, in AT & T country, and the repair status was random and uncontrollable.
OK, maybe panic is a little too strong a word, but it does amaze me how quickly work has become completely dependent on computers and the internet. There is little I can do without those tools.
It was not completely wasted time, however, as I used part of the time to do some of those things you should do regularly on your computer, but never seem to be able to get around to. So if you ever find yourself in the same situation as I was, here is a handy little list of things you can do without online access:
-I went through and deleted some programs I am not using anymore.
-I made sure my backup program is actually backing up what it is supposed to. (I actually found that it was not. So that is now squared away.)
-I went through My Documents, filed all the random things in an orderly fashion and into the proper folders I should have put them in originally.
-I cleaned up my desktop, deleting shortcuts I was not using.
-I ran the disk clean up utility and a spy-ware scan.
By the time the internet came back on, I felt like I had a new computer.
