By now I am used to making my living supplying products to companies that always look to me first when the boss says it is time to trim the budget. The office supply expenditures always stick out to business owners and managers as a place where considerable savings can be easily, and quickly achieved. Whether it is actually possible or not to achieve considerable savings is debatable, you have to print things and write things and staple things together, and you have to get those supplies from somewhere, and I guarantee you that there is not a considerable difference in cost on these items no matter where you buy them, from the publicly traded stores right down to me, one guy in St. Louis, MO.
The fact that business is slow, and the economy is tight leads buyers to shop around, maybe more than they used to, and as a result, people that I have developed a relationship with are casting me aside because they got a coupon in the mail from someone else, or they can save a couple bucks on paper, or maybe their boss thinks (but does not research) that he is getting ripped off because one independent guy could never be as competitive as the places he see commercials for on TV. Or worst of all, ‘corporate’ negotiated a contract with one of the big guys and they are not allowed to buy from anyone else. The big guy must have a lot of faith in his pricing if he has to contractually forbid you from buying from anyone else. All that does is to get you to stop ever looking at price. There are clauses in there that let them change their prices. And do they ever go down? Just wondering. You are getting ripped off.
This economy, I guess it’s the economy, has inspired people to take leave of their senses. Bosses have their people calling 10 places to save a nickel on paper clips. Or driving to the superstore to save a dollar on a carton of paper. You are spending your valuable, limited resources, like your time, to save pennies on commodity items. That’s insanity. An HP toner is going to cost $69, $72, $72.99, etc. You are not going to find it anywhere for $49. (Well, you might, but it is not genuine HP brand no matter how much they tell you it is, but we are getting into another post.) You can never recover the time you spent trying to save a couple bucks on your supply order, the time spent driving to, and wandering the aisles of the store, searching for help. Maybe you like the looking around, but does your boss like paying you to waste time on the clock? I doubt it, but that is hard to measure and if you can save him a little on his post-its, you can show that in a spread sheet, and he will be a happy man and your rear is covered.
There are independent suppliers like me in every city, big and small, and we are all willing and able to give you a fair price for your supplies and help you save your most precious resource, your time. They deliver for you, charge you the same as anyone, answer their phones, they know what they are talking about…the list goes on.
Maybe I am ranting, but please just try and see all the value someone provides you before you cast them aside, that is all I am asking.
