Printer Malware: HP Printer hack explained in frightening detail

Cory Doctorow at Boing Boing brought deeper attention today to a story that has been making news for a few weeks, including here, about HP printers being vulnerable to hackers.

The story was sensationalized – with the common takeaway being that hackers could gain control of your printers and turn them into fireballs. HP printers vulnerable to hackers – but here’s how to protect yourself

Don’t take a hammer to your printer fleet…yet.

MSNBC issued a report warning of a flaw in HP’s printer firmware update procedures that could expose your company’s printers to hackers. The headline was clearly meant to scare: Exclusive: Millions of printers open to devastating hack attack, researchers say.

HP wants you to print your own magazines; buy much more ink

Just when you thought maybe HP was getting their act together, they come along and do something so crazy, you wonder if it is for real.

In this case, they are now letting you print magazines on your home printer. What? Why would you want to do that? Apparently HP thinks you enjoy buying lots of their ink cartridges.

And this is apparently for real, HP has inked a deal with Condé Nast publishing that would automatically send copies of their magazines – such as Allure, Details, Epicurious, Glamour, Golf Digest, Self, and Wired – to your HP printer, for you to print out and enjoy.

Is it me, or do you read that previous sentence and anticipate seeing the word ‘iPad’ instead of ‘HP printer’?

Because that may be useful.
