A big tip of the hat to Google Blogoscoped for bringing this to my attention.
Not only is there a new Google Toolbar for Firefox, it includes (among several others) a new feature that allows you to open new tabs in Firefox that present themselves like the Google Chrome start page. Here is a picture of it from my browser:

This feature has the makings of a time-saver for me. I really like that it shows you your recently closed tabs. I know that Firefox has that function built in, but it is now really easy to fire off a ‘control-T’ keyboard shortcut in Firefox, which quickly opens a new tab, and see the list of recently closed tabs, along with sites you visit most as well as ones you have recently bookmarked all in one place.
I did have a conflict upon installation. I was using a Firefox plug-in called Speed-Dial that was performing a similar function. It was also preventing the Google new tab feature from working. I had to go turn that off, so you may have some tinkering to do as well when you first turn on the feature.
The new version 5 toolbar for Firefox overall has some nice new features and is worth an upgrade. I find in general that the Google Toolbar is a helpful addition to my online arsenal. (The Autofill feature alone probably saves me days out of the year, and it has been updated as well.) These new features, plus every thing else the toolbar brings to the table is just too much functionality to pass up.
