The economy is awful, that is not breaking news. However, as I am sitting here thinking about how to grow my business, an idea hit me. And it is certainly not a revolutionary idea, and in thinking about how to implement it personally, it’s clear that it could take some extra effort. I won’t solve the world’s problems, but I am certain I can make a small difference in my town by buying locally.
It’s a bit of a self-serving idea to be sure, because I am an independent office supplier trying to compete against corporate giants, but what if we all spent our money locally? Go to a your local pizza guy instead of Domino’s. Is there still a corner drug store in your area? I know there is not one every other mile down the road like the Walgreen’s are, but it’s there. Search it out.
Some businesses are inherently local: ethnic restaurants and hair salons come to mind; yet other categories, stores like Target, electronics retailers, and yes, office suppliers, seem to be dominated by corporations. But there are local options in all those cases.
Seek them out. The service will be better, the pricing will be the same, and your money will be helping to make a living for a neighbor, rather than a corporation.
